Judy Dodge knows classrooms- and she knows how to bridge sound practice and classroom practicality. With this book, teachers will not only expand their toolkits of strategies for effective instruction in academically diverse settings, but they’ll understand more about why these strategies work as well.

As assistant superintendent, I am eager to find experts to train our teachers. Finding just the right one who is engaging, knowledgeable and capable of relating to classroom teachers is often challenging. The “expert” has to effectively facilitate learning by engaging teachers in meaningful activities and strategies that can directly relate to classroom practice, and, at the same time, improve student achievement. Judy Dodge is that expert! Countless numbers of our teachers have been through Judy’s training in differentiation of instruction and come away excited about her strategies and anxious to implement them the very next day in their classrooms. It doesn’t get any better than that! Judy’s many years as a classroom teacher enables her to connect with teachers and address the same frustrations that they deal with day after day; but, her positive attitude and passion for differentiating learning becomes contagious and teachers are very much drawn to her. Her strategies are tried and true, practiced by teachers throughout the tri-state area. Without doubt, she has transformed learning in our district.

Judy’s carefully constructed book starts by reminding us that, despite all the generalities we make about learning styles, each child is unique, and that those unique qualities can make for an enriched and enjoyable learning experience for all... Many teachers are familiar with [Bloom’s] taxonomy, but Judy’s suggestions offer some novel ways to use it to move all students to higher levels of thinking.

“Judy’s workshops made me believe that differentiation is not only possible, but it is essential.”

Judy Dodge has worked with our secondary (6-12) English Language Arts and Math teachers.  We structured our workshops as a two-day staff development that was specific to each content area.  Teachers attended the first session where they had an introductory day and reviewed a wealth of strategies.  Judy's presentations are task specific and she uses relevant curriculum tasks as samples when presenting her strategies.  This style of presentation has been highly effective.  Teachers then have approximately 4-6 weeks to go back to their classrooms, try out the strategies, and share results with their colleagues. On the second workshop day Judy has teachers report back to their colleagues.  South Huntington teachers have reported that they find her style of presentation and the materials that are provided very useful.   A follow up survey showed an enormous buy-in and credits Judy Dodge with a well developed workshop that has met their needs.  Most importantly, the district now has added a strong set of strategies to the teachers' toolboxes and a common language that teachers use in planning their lessons.  The teachers' endorsement of Judy's workshop has motivated us to expand our plans to Social Studies and Science.  Virtually every teacher responded that they came away from this professional development learning something new!

Teachers who want to engage their students with varied and appropriately challenging formative assessment tasks will love this book- and their students will be the beneficiaries.

This is one of the first books I've read in my 7 years of being a teacher that I actually enjoyed reading and that I find myself referring to again and again. Yes, if you have been a teacher for a while, there are things in this book that you are probably already aware of and use, but this book also gave me so many more ideas of how to use the things I already know plus tons of new ideas. My kids love having a teacher whose class and assignments are always new, exciting, unexpected and unlike any thing they have the rest of the day and I have to thank this book for helping me continue to grow into the teacher whose class and assignments are too fun not to engage in.

I work with students who have very specific needs and abilities. There have been so any times where I have attended workshops hoping to come back with techniques and strategies I can implement in my classroom, but have come back empty-handed. This is definitely NOT one of those times!

I really enjoy your classes because you can go back to school and implement ideas immediately. We created smart cards for our science unit. I liked being able to use it as an assessment by collecting the cards when the students create them and then as a review and study tool. We have also been using exit cards frequently. This is very helpful in creating groups for small group instruction. Thanks!

I have known that differentiation in the classroom is key to student success. Practical application has been my stumbling block. Finally, a resource has surfaced that offers theory and practice! I was able to use the strategies immediately. The format of the book is easy to follow. I have already recommended it to my teammates. This is a must-read for classroom teachers. (I wish my own children's teachers would read it as well!) Another plus is the abundance of other resources, including websites for more in-depth information.

I really enjoyed your classes! You are so excited about your ideas, which are great, it made me excited! I couldn't wait to get back to my class to put some of them to work! Since our last class, I have used smart cards to help my kids learn about geology as well as to prepare for our upcoming e-mission. I found it a great way to introduce a new subject in a fun way. In addition, it was a very helpful way to ensure that the students learned what they were supposed to. Really looking forward to our next class.

Differentiation in Action is an outstanding resource! Well-grounded in theory, it provides teachers and administrators with excellent instructional tools and strategies that any teacher can use to differentiate instruction and performance assessments. Some strategies are quick and easy; others are more comprehensive. Judy shares a brilliant, user-friendly integration of Bloom's Taxonomy and Gardner's Multiple Intelligences. Using Judy's models, "tiering by complexity" can become a reality for teachers. This book is a must have for teachers and administrators having the "differentiation dialogue!"

I sent 5 classroom teachers and my literacy coach to this PD and they came back raving about it. They said this was the best PD on differentiating instruction that they have ever had. I even asked them to turn key it during their grade conferences to their colleagues. They thought Ms. Dodge was excellent. She was knowledgeable and provided practical strategies for them to immediately begin to use in the classroom.

Enjoyed your workshop!! The kids really took a liking to choice do nows and choice homeworks!! Giving them a choice gave them a feeling of independence. Post-it notes at the door was a great way to end a lesson, getting all the children involved! It was actually fun:)
